Our Story

John Barnes & Company Pty Ltd Locksmiths is a family owned and operated company servicing commercial and residential customers throughout Melbourne. From our humble beginnings in 1949, we're transformed from a modest locksmith company to one of the most respected businesses in the industry.

John Franklin Barnes founded the company on the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale. Ever the entrepreneur, Barnes introduced the DeHavilland Jet Boat to Australia and was one of the first Victorian distributors of the famous Victor lawn mower.

By 1951, Ron Roberts had come on board as a business partner, and the pair developed a strong understanding of the direction they were heading. Back in the 1950s, the locksmith industry was relatively new. But with the support of locally iconic manufactured products – including Ogden Industries, Astra Hardware, Dalco and R.B.Davies – John Barnes & Company Pty Ltd Locksmiths created one of the first shop fronts for security products in Melbourne.

John commenced in 2003 as an enthusiastic apprentice and has progressed to become Manager and Director alongside Colin. John brings extensive security expertise in the latest technological advancements and systems.

Vanessa Farrell

Administration Manager

Vanessa is a loyal and high performing member of our team commencing in 2002. She is responsible for many initiatives that have been implemented in our business today.

Ashlea Orchard

Service Administrator

Ashlea commenced employment in 2013 and has become a confident and personable professional who excels as a Service Administrator. Ashlea is our customers point of contact for service job requests.

Pattama Hasler

Administration Officer

Pattama is part of our administration team engaged in customer relationships and account management. Pattama is an asset to our team and has taken on an important role in accounts.

Christopher Harwood

Senior Technical Locksmith

Christopher commenced employment with John Barnes & Co in 2011 in that time Christopher has been very efficient in all facets of the trade, he is an important part of our access control division in coordinating and carrying out scheduled maintenance for our corporate clients.

Shayne is a qualified locksmith with over 8 yrs. industry experience and is a key part of John Barnes & Co, working closely with our clients to deliver their security needs.

Automotive specialist

Eddie is our automotive workshop specialist commencing with John Barnes in 2018. He is capable of carrying out all specialised automotive locksmithing within our workshop.

Apprenctice Locksmith

Tam is our apprentice locksmith who shows due diligence and loyalty to our team. Tam is an important member in our workshop showing customer service in a professional manner, assisting customers with all their locksmith needs. We believe Tam has potential to lead.

Felipe is a qualified locksmith with extensive knowledge in the Automotive department. He specialises in car openings, Transponder key programming as well as general locksmithing and all automotive locksmithing.
